Chapters

To determine the final chapter count of a work, one should first assess the type of work they are dealing with:

• If the work has been released in two different media formats (i.e. digital and physical) and there is new content in either of them, the chapter count should match the one with more content.
• If the work has been released in two different formats (i.e. long-strip format and traditional pagination) and they have different chapter segmentation despite not having new content, the chapter count will match the one that was released first.
• If multiple editions of the work can be found, the chapter count should always match the first released edition.
• In the case of digital-only works or works that were never compiled into volumes, the chapter count should match that of the site/magazine the work was serialized in. The volume count should be left blank.
• If a manga is simultaneously being serialized in both a magazine and on a web platform while having different release frequencies, the magazine version should be prioritized.
• If a manga chapter is serialized in multiple parts (Example: Ajin ch 75, Konoyo Ibun ch 10), each part should be considered a full chapter.

Extra Chapters

The count does include things such as ‘side’ chapters (Example: Chapter 5.5), bonus chapters, and some prologues and epilogues.

<aside> 💡 TIP Bonus chapters are often referred to as 番外編 (Bangaihen), 書き下ろし (Kakioroshi) and おまけ (omake) in the table of contents.

<aside> 💡 TIP In the case of there being extra chapters outside of the main chapter count, a note should be created at the bottom of the description mentioning how many there are, and they should all be labeled extra chapters regardless of whether they were bonuses, side chapters, etc.

These notes should always be written in italic.

Volumes

The total number of volumes in the original print or eBook run of the work.
